Social Capital and Latina Caregiver Wellbeing Study: Intervention Development and Feasibility Testing

This study focuses on women caregivers in Latino families, who play a vital role in providing support for older family members with dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease. Progressive loss of cognition and functioning causes increased dependence on caregivers, who often face physical and emotional demands in caring for their loved ones. In addition, symptoms of depression, agitation and anxiety common in persons with dementia can lead to depression in their caregivers. Issues of access to care and support services due to geographic distance, changing inter-generational support systems, and economic instability intensify the physical and emotional burden that family caregivers experience. This study examines caregiver experience and preferences to develop a community-based caregiver support model that is effective for the Latino population.
